Would you use a indirect approach? I’m thinking maybe compliment him and talk about HIM. A guy told me that guys love it when a girl talks about them and what they like to do.

That works for almost anyone, and it’s an excellent approach for getting to know a person. I’ve used the same tactic to get to know girls, coworkers, and so on. The only people I’ve met who don’t like it are celebrities (visiting lecturers, in my case). On a lecture tour, you can get really tired about talking about yourself.
